I've worn out my version since a friend of mine tuned me onto the Double Six in And since then I've collected all their work. NB: this is a studio album not a live album. So I always start the CD at Ow! Double Six have captured the essence of Dizzy's big band sound. Get a hold of the original Dizzy recordings from the forties Ow! Dizzy is in fine shape and his solos are blazing. Bud is not given the spotlight but he still shines through. Nice bass work by Pierre Michelot.

To be fair, the album is pretty short under 40 mins if I am not mistaken. I am really picky, there are a couple of fillers: blue and boogie is okay, and oo-shoobee-doo-bee is rather fluffy.

But the rest of the tunes are absolutely delightful. If you know french, listen closely to the sci-fi lyrics by Mimi Perrin who, IMHO, stands head-to-head with Jon Hendricks in the pantheon of the vocalese gods. Apparently Mimi and Dizzy found common ground in jazz as well as sci-fi.

Five stars, no less, as one of the greatest vocalese albums ever. I picked this up for about 2 bucks in a store somewhere many years ago.. All three of these groups, to my ears, are collectives of soloists singing virtuosic music in tandem — just like the hard boppers that they were copying. None of the three really appeal to me. I admire all three, the first two greatly.

This is in contrast to two other offshoots, both of which appeal to me greatly. Five stars, no less, as one of the greatest vocalese albums ever. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Mimi Perrin formed Les Double Six de Paris in - a vocal sextet to perform vocalese versions of primarily classical music - but also jazz numbers, supported by a rhythm section. Sometimes, they used over-dubbing in order to produce a larger sound for example, to simulate an orchestra or a big band - which explains the group's Double Six name.

Over the next few years, they produced several albums and enjoyed considerable popular success. On this particularly enjoyable album from , they collaborated with the great trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, working essentially on material from Dizzy's "back catalogue".

Dizzy recorded his contribution to most of the tracks in Paris, with Bud Powell on piano sadly no longer at his best but still worth hearing , Pierre Michelot on bass and the great Kenny Clarke on drums.

The other couple of tracks were recorded back in the States with his current group including saxophonist James Moody and pianist Kenny Barron. Vocalese is not really to my taste, but I found this album very enjoyable. Table Of Contents. Submit Feedback. Thank you for your feedback. Author of France Today and others. See Article History.
